In the municipality of Mettlach, a virtual multi-generation house is being created to make it easier for especially older people to access the internet. The members receive materials, knowledge, and contacts to help them navigate the digital world.
The project "Virtual Multigenerational House" has been running for six years, initiated by the Media Network Saar-Lor-Lux association together with the Ministry of Labor, Social Affairs, Women and Health and the State Media Authority, and holds a pioneering position nationwide. It aims to intensify the exchange between generations and extend it into the virtual space.
In the project phase 2022/23, a multigenerational house is being established in seven Saarland municipalities, and in Mettlach, Mayor Daniel Kiefer also accepted the symbolic key for this purpose. "Our community and its citizens are being digitalized step by step," the head of administration explained at the opening event in Mettlach. "Mastering and using digital communication channels is more important today than ever."
In addition to administration and schools, the focus is now primarily on providing senior citizens with access to the virtual world. This medium makes it possible to maintain contacts despite physical limitations, request help when needed, or conduct medical appointments digitally.
Kathrin Ziegler, project manager at the Saarland State Media Authority, explained the details of the project. Courses have been offered since 2005 – initially with laptops, then with tablets and smartphones. In Saarland, 18 virtual multigenerational houses have already been opened, 16 of which are still in operation. A total of 125 people applied for the 70 places available in the current phase – a sign that there is a need for more digital participation and great interest exists.
The twelve participants from the municipality of Mettlach were given tablets, which become their property upon successful completion of the program. The courses initially teach general media and digital skills. Additionally, they learn to use interactive communication options in everyday life and become familiar with digital applications and opportunities.
