On July 2, 2022, relatives of the Walter family, members of the Förderverein der Bäder der Stadt Friedrichsthal, the swimming club, representatives of the Friedrichsthal fire department, members of the city council, the press, and interested citizens followed the city's invitation to the naming ceremony at the Friedrichsthal swimming pool.
By unanimous decision of the Friedrichsthal city council a few weeks ago, it was decided that the square at the Friedrichsthal swimming pool will in future bear the name "Günter-Walter-Platz".
With joy and reverence for Günter Walter's outstanding commitment, the mayor unveiled the street sign.
The name of Günter Walter and his tireless commitment in Friedrichsthal will thus remain firmly etched in the memory of future generations.
In his youth, Günter Walter was among the best divers in Germany. Additionally, he served as Vice President of the Saarland Swimming Federation for over 20 years and was a co-founder and chairman of the SSG Max Ritter. Walter also played an important role in the citizens' initiative "Save the Friedrichsthal Outdoor Pool," which led to the establishment of today's pool support association.
Furthermore, Günter Walter was active in the volunteer fire brigade for over 60 years. In the 1980s, he took on the responsibility of fire chief, co-founded the youth fire brigade in Friedrichsthal as well as the fire brigade association in the city federation and at the state level. Due to his services, he was appointed honorary fire chief upon reaching the age limit.
His extensive services to the community were recognized in January 2014 with the awarding of the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon.
