Since 1987, cross-border archaeological excavations have been carried out in the German-French European Cultural Park Bliesbruck-Reinheim. On the German side, there are the remains of a Roman villa. In 2015, Roman construction debris was found here along with a massive layer of wall painting fragments. The find includes about 12,000 fragments to date.
In December 2019, supported by the Ministry of Education and Culture (MBK), a cooperation and research project was initiated between the State Monument Office of Saarland, MFB MusterFabrik Berlin GmbH, and the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Systems and Design Technology IPK to restore the wall painting fragments. The project, carried out under the name "DigiGlue" ("Digital Gluing"), aimed to develop an assistance system for the digitization, visualization, and digital repositioning of wall painting fragments, enabling the highly sensitive cultural heritage to be digitally preserved in a material-friendly manner for future generations and later processed scientifically and conservatively without physical contact.
An automated scanner has been developed that simultaneously captures the front and back of the wall painting fragments while creating a height map in parallel. The digital images of the fragments, along with additional metadata for each fragment, are stored in a database. On a puzzle PC of the assistance system, the scanned fragments can then be sorted, rotated, and assembled according to various criteria. Since October 2021, the system has been located in Reinheim and has started its service.
We cordially invite you to the presentation of the project "DigiGlue" and the previous results as well as further plans for the development of the location with Minister of Education and Culture Christine Streichert-Clivot, her predecessor Ulrich Commerçon, the district administrator of Saarpfalz district Dr. Theophil Gallo, the mayor of the municipality of Gersheim Michael Clivot, the head of the State Office for Monument Protection Dr. Georg Breitner, and excavation leader Michael Ecker:
