In the state capital Saarbrücken, this year's City Cycling event, which took place from May 15 to June 4, was successful.
New record: 235,345 kilometers driven in Saarbrücken
This year, 1,331 cyclists in 69 teams covered and logged a total of 235,345 kilometers in Saarbrücken. Last year, a total of 968 cyclists reported 197,000 kilometers. Accordingly, the number of participants increased by 363, and the total kilometers by more than 38,000. This means the total distance is almost six times the length of the Earth's equator. According to the Climate Alliance, more than 36,000 kilograms of CO2 were avoided.
Mayor Uwe Conradt: "The 'Stadtradeln' campaign encourages people to choose the bicycle as a healthy, affordable, and environmentally friendly means of transportation. The once again increased number of participants reflects the interest and motivation of the people of Saarbrücken. In doing so, they also contribute to climate protection. Strengthening the cycling infrastructure in Saarbrücken makes it increasingly attractive to switch to the bicycle. This is the path we want and will continue to follow."
The teams with the most members
The team of the Saarland State Theatre gathered the largest group with 48 cyclists. The team from the Ministry for Environment, Climate, Mobility, Agriculture, and Consumer Protection participated with 40 members, while the Winterberg team and the team of the Chamber of Labor each had 36 members.
School Cycling Campaign
The "School Cycling" campaign, which took place for the fourth time in Saarland this year, was particularly successful. In Saarbrücken, 19 school teams (13 the previous year) with more than 675 members (around 610 the previous year) participated.
With 121 cyclists, the Willi-Graf-Schools not only formed the largest school team as in the previous year but also the largest group overall. The Marienschule ranks second in both team size and kilometers. The third place in the kilometer ranking was achieved by the team from ZF Friedrichshafen, which also formed the largest company team.
Other large school teams cycled for the Klarenthal primary school, the Gymnasium am Schloss, and the Gymnasium am Rotenbühl.
Participants from the Saarbrücken City Council
A total of 21 members of the city council, more than last year, actively participated this year. State parliament member Sascha Haas (SPD) was the only "Stadtradelstar" in Saarbrücken this year. Stadtradelstars commit to completely giving up their cars for three weeks. During the campaign period, Sascha Haas cycled 500 kilometers. He blogged about his experiences. Three members of the regional assembly also took part in the cycling campaign.
The Ministry of Environment, Climate, Mobility, Agriculture and Consumer Protection supports the "Stadtradeln" campaign.
