This morning (03.06.2022), around 8:00 a.m., special unit forces supported the weapons authority of the city of Saarbrücken in executing a search warrant. During the operation, the perpetrator seriously injured a special unit officer. During the arrest measures around 2:15 p.m., the officers found the 67-year-old dead in his apartment.
After the man severely injured the police officer with a gunshot, he barricaded himself in his apartment on Wilhelm Street in Klarenthal. Throughout the morning, the perpetrator repeatedly fired targeted shots at the police barricade and police vehicles. Numerous attempts by the negotiation team to make contact with the perpetrator failed. When special forces entered the man’s apartment around 2:15 p.m., they first found his dog and then the man himself lifeless.
Contrary to the initial press release, the policewoman was not injured by flying glass shards (cf. press release from 06/03/2022, 09:43 AM). The officer, who was seriously but not life-threateningly injured, is currently hospitalized. Other deployed personnel suffered acoustic trauma from the shots.
In addition to officers from the Saarland police, police officers from Rhineland-Palatinate as well as rescue workers were involved in the operation. The area of Wilhelmstraße/Warndtstraße in Klarenthal was completely closed for several hours.
Background of the search: The search of the perpetrator was ordered by the administrative court due to violations of gun laws. The weapons authority of the city of Saarbrücken had already instructed the man in advance to surrender several firearms. The investigations are ongoing.
We thank all deployed authorities and organizations with security responsibilities for their support.
