On the evening of May 23, 2022, at around 10:45 PM, a burglar was caught in the act at the Sparkasse branch in Illingen thanks to a witness tip. The 18-year-old perpetrator (of Albanian descent), without a fixed residence, was hiding in the cashier area but was arrested by the police without resistance. He had previously torn off a drawer at a counter, gaining access to rolled coins. During subsequent police measures, it was determined that he was a suspect in three other offenses that occurred between the late afternoon and evening of May 23, 2022. These included property damage to a motor vehicle, a break-in at the Takko store in Neunkirchen with theft of clothing items, and an attempted break-in at the Möbel Martin store in NK-Wellesweiler. Furthermore, it was discovered that he is suspected of additional crimes throughout Saarland from May 18 to May 22, 2022, including a break-in at the Lidl store in Bexbach on May 22, 2022, during which he was apprehended in the act. Following this, the Homburg police station recommended filing a detention request. This was denied on May 23, 2022, by the Saarbrücken public prosecutor’s office. A detention request was submitted again by the Saarbrücken public prosecutor’s office on May 24, 2022. After appearing before the examining magistrate, a detention warrant was ultimately issued. He was then taken into custody at the correctional facility.
