On Sunday, 22.05.2022, around 9:00 PM, a serious traffic accident occurred on the A 8, near the Friedrichsthal-Bildstock junction, heading towards Zweibrücken.
A 62-year-old from Weiskirchen was driving his Mercedes SLK towards Zweibrücken, coming from Luxembourg, when he lost control of his vehicle for reasons not yet known near the Friedrichsthal-Bildstock motorway junction and collided head-on with the central guardrail. The vehicle only came to a stop 100 meters further in the opposite direction of travel.
The driver at fault was seriously injured in the collision. He was found to be under the influence of alcohol and a blood sample was taken. Appropriate legal proceedings were initiated.
The central guardrail was completely deformed over several sections due to the accident, creating a huge field of debris and fragments on the lanes of both directions. This necessitated extensive clearance and cleanup operations by the police and highway maintenance. The lane in the direction of Zweibrücken had to be temporarily fully closed. Traffic was diverted. The traffic in the opposite direction ran on a single lane.
