Since 2001, May 22nd has been celebrated worldwide as International Day for Biological Diversity. It commemorates May 22, 1992, the day the text of the Convention on Biological Diversity was officially adopted.
The Global Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services warns of the unprecedented loss of natural heritage and biodiversity. Around one million animal and plant species are threatened with extinction. UNESCO contributes to the preservation of biodiversity, among other things, through its biosphere reserves.
Since 2017, the city of St. Ingbert has been conducting an annual campaign for the International Day for Biological Diversity.
The biosphere city of St. Ingbert celebrates the International Day for Biological Diversity on May 23, 2022, with a planting campaign of wild rose bushes
Urban green and open spaces near residential areas enhance the quality of life in the city. They are places where citizens can experience and enjoy nature and the landscape. But they are even more than that; they serve for recreation and health and have a social significance. Last but not least, they are beneficial for a city's climate.
Several years ago, a citizens' initiative was formed to preserve the green space "Pfuhlwiese." A part of the green area was developed into a boule court with seating. The immediate surroundings of the boule court are maintained as a lawn, while the rest of the area is an extensively maintained meadow to promote insect diversity.
In line with this, native wild rose bushes will be planted on the grounds for International Day for Biological Diversity. "The wild beauties captivate with their scent, score points for their robustness, and provide abundant nectar and pollen for the insect world. And in the cold season, wild roses not only beautify our gardens with their rose hips, but also provide food for the birds," it is aptly described by NABU.
The members of the citizens' initiative and all interested citizens are cordially invited to the planting event. Mayor Dr. Ulli Meyer will accompany the planting on Monday, May 23, 2022, at 4:30 p.m.
