For several years now, our beautiful local forests have increasingly fallen victim to climate change. Increasing dryness as well as the growing occurrence of bark beetles leave clear traces and are causing increasing concern. It is all the more gratifying, therefore, that our forests are receiving broad support through private as well as company-related tree donations. For example, the Berbrich family, who run the EDEKA market in Blieskastel-Lautzkirchen, donated an impressive number of 1,100 young trees for the Blieskastel city forest, despite having suffered fire damage shortly before.

Mayor Bernd Hertzler therefore invited people to a large tree planting event in the Blieskastel-Lautzkirchen city forest to mark Forest Day 2022. In addition to the Berberich family and the employees of the Blieskastel city forest, the planting team was also supported by numerous young helpers. The pupils of Kirchberg-Am Schlossberg Elementary School from Blieskastel-Lautzkirchen actively assisted together with their teacher Karin Rieke. By the end of the day, around 1,100 young trees were planted on an area affected by storm damage and bark beetles, thus bringing new life to the forest in this location. Let us now hope for a rainy spring so that the seedlings can grow well. (hw)
