On August 13, Mobility Minister Petra Berg handed over a check for 196,200.00 euros to the building department head of the state capital Saarbrücken, Patrick Berberich, for the barrier-free design of the "Sudstraße" bus stop. The stops in Dudweiler have been redesigned in both directions so that people with physical disabilities can use bus transport independently and safely. A crossing aid ensures that people with mobility and visual impairments can also safely reach the other side of the road.
"Mobility is a basic need and an essential prerequisite for social participation. Therefore, our goal is to enable as many people as possible to have self-determined and as independent as possible access to public transport, whether they are using a wheelchair, walker, white cane, or stroller," says Minister Berg. "For this purpose, we have already invested around 8.6 million euros throughout Saarland. Many more projects are currently being worked on. I am pleased that the Sudstraße in Dudweiler is now barrier-free. Because the central stop provides access to local retail and offers good connections to the state capital Saarbrücken."
Specifically, new high curbs were installed in Dudweiler, allowing level boarding of the bus. The routing towards Sulzbach was slightly adjusted to ensure a straight approach of the bus. In addition, a crossing aid with the corresponding guidance system was set up.
The Mobility Ministry is funding the conversion within the framework of the guideline for Sustainable Mobility (NMOB) at 90 percent. The eligible costs amount to 218,000.00 euros, the funding amounts to 196,200.00 euros.
