State Capital Saarbrücken launches competition „Saarbrücken Sustainability Award for Companies“

This year, the state capital Saarbrücken will, for the first time, honor companies with the new Saarbrücken Sustainability Award.

This is a further development of the competition „FAIRnünftiges Unternehmen“ established since 2019. Based on the sustainability strategy adopted by the state capital Saarbrücken two years ago, the focus of the competition has been expanded. The Saarbrücken Sustainability Award honors companies that anchor sustainability in their economic actions and take responsibility for the environment and society.

Interested parties can apply online for the award by Sunday, October 25, at www.faires.saarbruecken.de.

Making commitment visible and inspiring other companies

Mayor Uwe Conradt: „The goal of the Saarbrücken Sustainability Award is to win even more companies for sustainable action, to make existing commitment visible, and to promote exchange between companies. The competition shows how many positive contributions there already are in the field of sustainability in the economy.”

Mayor Barbara Meyer: „Sustainability is no longer just an add-on but an important success factor for companies. Many Saarbrücken companies already take responsibility – whether through climate protection measures, good working conditions, fair products, or social commitment. With the Saarbrücken Sustainability Award, we want to honor this commitment, make it visible, and inspire other companies to also pursue sustainable paths. Because sustainable development only succeeds together – with a strong economy as an important partner.”

Competition open to a broad range of participants

Companies of all sizes based in Saarbrücken can participate – from family businesses through medium-sized companies up to larger corporations. The competition is particularly aimed at companies from the service, retail, gastronomy and accommodation sectors, as well as industry and manufacturing.

We are looking for companies that, for example, work in a resource-conserving manner, save energy, promote fair working conditions, use sustainable and fairly traded products, take social responsibility, or design digital solutions sustainably.

More visibility and concrete support

The competition offers participating companies numerous advantages. They have the opportunity to present their sustainable commitment to a broad public, including with a company profile on the competition platform, a presentation on a digital map, as well as use of the competition seal. At the award ceremony, participants will be introduced and will receive professional photos for their public relations work.

Furthermore, the state capital, together with its partners, offers free workshops and consultations on topics such as sustainability, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), digitalization, and Artificial Intelligence. The competition also promotes exchange and networking among committed companies in Saarbrücken.

The winners in each category will additionally receive an individual on-site energy consultation, revealing savings potentials in energy consumption, operating costs, and CO₂ emissions.

Simple application

Interested parties can apply easily via an online form. For companies, it should usually take no longer than 15 to 30 minutes to answer the respective questions about their sustainable commitment.

Together for a sustainable economy

The Saarbrücken Sustainability Award for Companies is an initiative of the Office for Climate and Environmental Protection of the state capital Saarbrücken with support from the Office for Economic Development and Labor Market, the Saarland Chamber of Industry and Commerce, the Saarland Chamber of Labor, ECOTRANS e.V., mehrwert! e.V., the Fairtrade Initiative Saarland, the economic development agency Saaris, the August-Wilhelm Scheer Institute, and East Side Fab e.V.

The awards are decided by an independent jury which includes representatives from the state capital as well as partner organizations.
